Introduction

What is the universe? Why, when, and how was it created? How is it structured? Everyone must have thought about these questions at least once or twice. Cosmology is the field of study for people who are interested in solving those questions. The aim of this site is to introduce you to current cosmology research, and what we hope to learn.

You may be wondering how cosmology differs from astronomy. They are actually quite different. Astronomy is a natural science like physics, but the study of cosmology is more similar to philosophy. Cosmology examines the universe from various aspects using a larger scale than looking through a telescope, and it can approach deeper mysteries. It started long ago when people in the past, attracted by the mysteries of the universe, discussed philosophy while gazing into the far distant sky.

Cosmology these days is diverging from its original aim of looking at universe philosophically. Amazing new technology in the natural sciences have allowed us to improve our powers of observation, and so cosmology has become more technical and scientific than philosophical. If you are looking for books about cosmology, for example, there are more chances of finding them in the physics section in bookstores and libraries. It is true that recent attempts to capture the universe and to solve its mysteries using physics is quite popular. However, even physical phenomenon cannot be completely explained by mathematics, formulae and laws. In the end, what is discussed in cosmology, is the beginning, the end, and the significance of the universe and all life forms. We believe that it is a magnificent philosophy of solving the fate of this world itself.

Throughout history, a number of people in the past tried to understand the universe, which is the largest space and mystery we can imagine. Aristoteles, Archimedes, Copernicus, Galilei, Newton and Einstein have been inspired by the universe. In a few decades, the next name on this list could be yours. Continue reading and take this chance to step into cosmology.

In this chapter of "The Universe Today," we will mainly talk about the present condition of the universe.
